Introducing the Inman Clasp

The Inman Clasp

All removable orthodontic appliances rely on some form of clasps to retain the appliance securely in the correct position. There are many types of clasps including the preformed Ball Clasp and preformed Adams Clasp.

The Inman Clasp is a variation of the ball clasp an Adams Clasp with an adjustable bridge.

Advantages

The advantages of the Inman Clasp are as follows:

  1. Better retention than an Adams Clasp
  2. Much easier to bend than an Adams Clasp
  3. Can be adjusted below the bridge without affecting the wires above the bridge. This makes this clasp very easy to adjust; the ball ends can be bent in any direction to gain retention.
  4. The bridge allows the patient to grasp and remove the appliance easily.
  5. The bridge allows a labial bow, springs, hooks etc to be soldered to the clasping.
  6. The bridge adds strength; it eliminates deformation of the ball clasps. For example when you use 2 ball clasps they need constant adjusting because they deform going in and out of the patients mouth but the bridge eliminates this completely.
  7. The loop in the bridge (Omega Loop) allows the preformed clasp to be custom sized by either closing the loop to make the clasp narrower or by opening the loop to make the clasp wider.
